BACKGROUND: Dean Winchester & Supernatural
INCENTIVE/FIT:Given the chance, an offer like the one being offered to him by the people of Eudio doesn't come by often in Dean's life. Home, things are a constant struggle, something or someone trying to hurt both him and his brother, Sam, or the world at large. So where's the pain in getting cozy with someone for a little bit if it means the possible chance of easing some of the struggling going on back home? Dean might not be the most cuddly of people, but intimacy still isn't a completely foreign concept to him. He's more than fine with sex, so lowering the notch on that to something simpler isn't a problem either.
After all, all of this sounds better than, say, human sacrifices or soul cannons which open gateways to monster infested worlds.
Count him in any day.
As for the incentive itself, Dean wants Sam to be okay. Just okay through and through, despite the year Sam spent in Hell and how it fucked with him. He wants Sam to have all of his memories restored without any side-effects, and without a wall inside his mind to keep the bad memories at bay-- he doesn't want Sam to need it. He wants his brother healthy, if not happy, and as he was before Sam ever fell into Hell.

TO PURGATORY AND BACK
After getting thrown into Purgatory, Dean is quickly abandoned by Castiel. From there, the struggle begins as Dean starts searching for the angel, uncertain where he has gone. The plan is simple; find Cas, then an exit. Along the way, Dean meets a vampire named Benny, who quickly agrees to help Dean find Cas, and an exit he supposedly knows of, in exchange for Dean getting him out of Purgatory as well. Naturally, Dean is wary of Benny in the beginning, but soon the two of become quite tight, forming a friendship Dean hasn’t really experienced before. He’s clearly become somewhat more open-minded, the camaraderie between himself and Benny healthy. So they take on Purgatory together, slicing and dicing their through hoards of monsters, all whom are attracted to Dean’s humanity.
Eventually, they find Cas as well, who claims he left Dean to protect him from the Leviathan. Dean, insisting that he won’t let Cas run off again, makes the angel come with them, promising he won’t leave without Cas. So the three of them head to this supposed portal which will lead them out of Purgatory. Upon arriving at the location, they’re ambushed by more Leviathans, all whom want to tear Cas and Dean into pieces. They fight them off, but just as they’re about to leap through the portal, Cas lets go of Dean’s hand, and is left behind….
Once back, Dean and Benny part ways, and Dean goes off to find Sam. Once he does, he realizes Sam has given up hunting, which included even looking for a way to bring him back. Dean, still in shock after a year in what had basically been a non-stop combat zone, has a hard time accepting that Sam wouldn’t have looked for a way to bring him back. He feels somewhat betrayed. Between this, and what happened to Cas, Dean is left feeling like he’s on uneven footing. And as far as Castiel goes, Dean is torn between blaming himself for what happened as well as not quite understanding what had happened.
Meanwhile Kevin says he’s found another Word of God tablet, which entails how to permanently close the gates of Hell. Upon finding this out, Sam agrees to help Dean do so. However, before they can really get anything done, Kevin runs away from them, certain that the Winchesters can’t protect him… so the hunt for Kevin goes live. It takes them a while, but eventually they find Kevin by saving him from Crowley. Castiel also returns mysteriously, and is uncertain how exactly he’d escaped Purgatory. But with his help they face Crowley, and the table ends up being split in two. Crowley with one half, the Winchesters with the other— and now that they have Kevin on their side again, he goes back to work on translating the tablet with the help and protection of Garth.
Meanwhile, Benny has started to struggle with his stay topside, and calls to Dean or help. Dean refuses though, saying they should keep their distance… eventually this leads to a case of monster attacks in the area Benny was staying in. Dean, no matter how strained his friendship with Benny has become, refuses to believe the vampire has done anything bad. It turns out Benny did kill someone— but it was a hunter and Benny was protecting himself. Still, once Benny calls Dean to explain, Dean says it’s alright, but that he can’t really have a friendship at the time, and asks him not to be in contact with him anymore, although he’s thankful for everything Benny did.
Something odd happens soon after; Dean and Sam find a strange man in their motel room claiming to be Henry Winchester, and looking for John Winchester. It turns out Henry is their grandfather, sent forward in time to escape the Knight of Hell, Abaddon. Henry tells the Winchesters about the Men of Letters, and how he has the key to their base, which he needs to keep safe from the demon. Abaddon however, follows Henry into the future, and tries to get the key back. She kidnaps Sam, saying she’ll trade him for the key. Dean and Henry come up with a plan to save Sam though, and to stop her. They carve a demon trap into a bullet, and shoot her with it, leaving her unable to escape her body. Before they can do anything more though, she strikes Henry fatally… He gives them the key to the Letters bunker before dying. Abaddon, in turn, is dismembered and buried.
It’s here, in the bunker, that Dean and Sam make a new home for themselves. Kevin also gets to work there, with years and years worth of archives on translating the demon tablet. Sometime later, Kevin is finally successful in translating the tablet, and figures out how to close the gates of Hell. It includes three trials, which Sam decides to take up. The first trial is to kill a hellhound, and eventually Sam succeeds… However, completing each step of the trial makes Sam weaker and sicker, becoming ill.
Meanwhile, Castiel comes to the Winchester’s side, saying Crowley has unleashed a large group of demons on a small town, all in search of a crypt, and a valuable item within it. Jumping at the case, the Winchesters interrogate a demon on what’s so important about the crypt, only to find Meg who had been captured and tortured by Crowley since helping Dean and Sam take on Dick more than a year ago. She knows the location of the crypt, and agrees to help them locate it. When they do though, Crowley shows up— whom Meg and Sam decide to hold off while Dean and Cas go into the crypt. Cas isn’t alright however, and ends up attacking Dean in the crypt under the orders of another angel, Naomi. She was the one who pulled Cas out of purgatory, and has been using him to do her bidding. Dean manages to break Naomi’s control on Cas though, but Cas still flees, taking with him another tablet. Dean flees the crypt after that, he and Sam escaping the location while Meg holds off Crowley, and ends up dying by his blade.
Learning what the second trial is from a hysterical Kevin, Sam and Dean need to find a way into Hell. There, Sam would have to save an innocent soul and send it to Heaven to complete the trial. The brothers don’t know how to get to Hell though, and capture a demon to interrogate. He tells them there is a way in, to be smuggled through. After this, Dean and Sam find a reaper posing as a taxi driver. He agrees to bring Sam to Hell, telling him he has 24 hours before he has to come back. Dean stays behind… Sam and Ajay, the reaper, end up in Purgatory instead of Hell though, but the reaper tells Sam all he has to do is follow the stream until he finds the secret entrance to Hell, then disappears. On Earth, Crowley finds Ajay soon after, and kills him, cutting off Sam’s access back home. Sam however, goes into Hell and finds Bobby, whom he decides to save…
Dean finds Ajay dead and realizes Sam has no way of coming back. He’s forced to call Benny for a huge favour, asking the vampire to die and go to Purgatory to help Sam to the portal he’d showed Dean before. Benny agrees, and Dean cuts off his head… In Purgatory, Benny helps Sam escape, but is forced to stay behind to hold off some of the monsters in Purgatory. Dean, waiting in the location where he’d appeared when he’d returned from Purgatory, helps Sam set Bobby’s soul loose… However both Crowley and Naomi appear before Bobby can ascend to Heaven. Crowley claims Bobby’s soul is his because he was in Hell, Naomi on the other hand defends the Winchesters and says Bobby’s soul is wrongfully in Hell. After this she tries to kill Crowley, but the demon king flees. Naomi tells the Winchesters they can trust her, but Dean remains suspicious…. Bobby’s soul goes up to Heaven after that, while Sam suffers the side-effects of having completed another step of the Trials.
After this, Crowley visits and tells Kevin he killed his mother, and takes Kevin. The Winchesters search for Kevin, but have no luck. Eventually they get a message from Kevin, talking about how he’s started deciphering the last Trial. The Winchesters work harder to find a way to save Kevin, which eventually leads them to an old recluse living alone. He turns out to be an angel named Metatron, who agrees to help the Winchesters by saving Kevin. Kevin reveals that he knows what the final Trial is: cure a demon. How to go about that turns out to be a lot more difficult, so Sam, Dean and Kevin all get to work on going through all the information at the Bunker.
Soon, the discover a video of a member of The Men of Letters trying to cure a demon. He fails however, accidentally, and kills the demon instead. Eventually they find a recording of Father Thompson’s attempt at curing a demon, where he uses purified blood to cleanse the soul. They begin to see it work, as the demon starts feeling guilt and other emotions for his past actions. His method is successful, and soon enough the demon has been cleansed and restored. Dean and Sam go back to where they buried Abaddon’s dismembered body, ready to try the method on her. But when they’re ready to use the method on her, she’s escaped leaving them without a demon to test the cure on…
While doing this, they get a call from Crowley saying he’s going to start killing off all the people Dean and Sam have saved over the years unless they give up the tablet and Kevin. Refusing to do so, they try to save some faces from the past, like Sarah Blake, but fail to keep her alive. She chokes to death thanks to a hex bag… Sam begins to think they should give in, but Dean tells him they have to soldier on.Crowley’s at it again however, and this time targets Jody Mills. This causes Sam and Dean to finally surrender and give up the tablet in exchange for her life, so they set up a meeting. However, they’re also going to attempt to make Crowley the third trial, by capturing him at the meeting place. They succeed, but before Sam can get started on curing Crowley, Cas comes to Dean, saying Metatron has taken Naomi as hostage and that he needs Dean’s help. Reluctantly, Dean leaves Sam to complete the last Trial alone and follows Cas to Heaven. Some running around later, Kevin gets in contact with Cas and Dean, telling them that none of Metatron’s trials appear on the angel tablet, the tablet found in the crypt— and then Naomi herself appears as well, and tells them that she has discovered Metatron true plan; to banish all angels from Heaven— and that all of this has been partly his doing, his plans. They don’t quite believe her at first, but she also informs them that Sam completing the Trials will cost him his life, so Cas brings Dean back to the church. The angel returns to Heaven after, only to find Naomi dead. Metatron captures Cas after that, and takes his grace.
At the church, Dean confronts Sam, telling him of the cost of completing the Trial. Sam insists on continuing, though Dean tries to talk some sense into him. Sam relents eventually and collapses as Dean tries to get him outside. By their car, Dean looks up just in time to see Metatron’s plans come to life, as thousands of angels fall like meteors from the sky, banished from Heaven.
A BROKEN HEAVEN AND DEMON QUEEN
Immediately after Heaven breaks and all angels fall, Sam falls into a coma-like state thanks to what the Trials have put him through. Dean rushes him to the hospital, where he’s told that Sam’s off in bad shape, with very little chance of recovery. Dean attempts to contact Cas to make him heal Sam, but seeing as Castiel has fallen along with all other angels, he’s unable to answer. Another angel arrives on the scene however, calling himself Ezekiel. He says he can help Sam, but in order to do so he has to posses Sam’s body. Dean agrees, but since angels need the person’s consent to body-jump, Dean and Ezekiel trick Sam into letting the angel into into Sam’s body.
While Ezekiel heals Sam’s body, Dean, Kevin and a kidnapped Crowley work to find a way of restoring Heaven, and also a way to deal with the still loose Abaddon. The Knight of Hell is attempting to seize Hell while Crowley is gone, rallying up demons with full force. For a while Sam — with a sometimes dormant Ezekiel inside of him — and Dean simply hunt around for clues during their normal cases, but eventually Sam starts to realise something isn’t right with him, thought Dean brushes him off time and time again at the orders of Ezekiel who claims it’s better Sam doesn’t know he’s in him.
After a while, Metatron also returns to earth, and reveals that Ezekiel is in fact an angel named Gadreel, who used to be the keeper of the Garden of Eden in Heaven, picked for job by God himself. But after failing to keep Lucifer from entering the garden, he was banished into a prison. Metatron, knowing Gadreel’s true identity, asks him to work together with him to rebuild Heaven in exchange for wiping away any misdeeds Gadreel might have done in the past. Accepting, Gadreel joins forces with him.
Dean finds out about this soon enough, and tries to warn Sam so he can eject Gadreel out of his body, but it’s too late. Gadreel kills Kevin as he leaves with Sam’s body, leaving behind a broken Dean. After searching for a means to get Gadreel out of Sam’s body, Dean teams up with Castiel and Crowley, Cas having stolen another angel’s grace. Together they trap Gadreel which allows Crowley to jump into him as well and try to make Sam see he is being possessed by an angel. Eventually it works, and Sam expels Gadreel from his body. In exchange for Crowley’s help, Dean has to let him go…
Sam, awake and healed, is furious with Dean’s deception and the brother’s strain to make up after everything that’s happened. This leads to Dean teaming up with Crowley in order to take on Abaddon, who is a problem for both of them. They discover a way of killing her; the Mark of Cain and the First Blade. To obtain both, Dean needs to find Cain himself, who was the original Knight of Hell, and who had trained the rest including Abaddon. Cain agrees to give both the Blade and Mark to Dean, though he warns him of their use. Dean takes both on, either way.
Meanwhile, Cas and Sam deal with Heaven and the new power struggle within it. Cas defeats a power-hungry angel by the name of Bartholomew which leads to some of the angels looking to Cas for leadership…
Dean on the other hand, begins to struggle with the effects of the Blade, which leads to more aggression and bloodlust every time he kills someone or something with it. Eventually though, much to everyone else’s worry, Dean finds and kills Abaddon, which bestows on him a massive power surge— this surge leads to Dean deciding he will go after Metatron by himself, without Cas or Sam. Gadreel comes around too, having grown tired of Metatron’s play at God, and tries to team up with the Winchesters and Castiel. Dean, however, tries to kill him for what he’d done to Sam, half driven by his new-found bloodlust and protectiveness for Sam. Gadreel survives, which results in Cas and Sam tying up Dean until they can figure out what to do about him… Dean, tied up and alone, ends up summoning Crowley who frees him, and they flee together, off to find Metatron.
Gadreel and Cas sneak into Heaven in order to get Metatron’s angel tablet, the source of his power, but instead they get caught and thrown prison. Gadreel sacrifices himself for a spell to free Cas from prison, though. Meanwhile, Sam rushes to help Dean fight Metatorn, but he arrives too late, just in time to see Metatron stab Dean in the chest with an angel-killing blade. Cas arrives and tricks Metatron, managing to capture him, and ends up throwing him into the same prison he and Gadreel were being held at…
Back on Earth, Dean ends up dying in Sam’s arms, and later, when Sam summons Crowley to come help Dean, the demon instead shows up in Dean’s room, where Dean’s body has been laid out on his bed. Crowley, seemingly knowing what it means to die with the Mark of Cain, places the First Blade into Dean’s hands, which revives Dean as a demon, and a Knight of Hell.
After being revived by the blade, Dean disappears with Crowley. Now a demon, Dean is entirely carefree-- unfeeling in every way, only looking to have a good time. There is no pain and no real joy, so Dean lives it up, going from dive bar to dive bar with Crowley in tow, howling at the moon. All Sam has is a note saying to let his brother go. But despite all of this, and to Crowley's growing worry, Dean is becoming more and more aggressive, due to the Mark of Cain needing to be fed. Dean brushes it off as being a demon and nothing more, though Crowley knows better... This all escalates, until it becomes clear that Dean won't listen to anyone, not even Crowley.
Meanwhile, a hunter by the name of Cole from Dean's past emerges, bent on revenge because Dean killed his father when he was a child. He finds Sam and kidnaps him, hoping that by torturing Sam he'll be able to make Dean emerge. Dean however, doesn't give a flying fuck, saying that's Sam's problem to deal with and hangs up. It's here that even Sam realizes how far Dean is gone, how being a demon has changed him into what's almost a classic monster. He's uncaring and loving it, a Dean with no cares, with none of the warmth of compassion that he might have held before. He's only out for himself, and everyone else is just a pawn-- a trait which is found in most Knights of Hell.
When the plan fails, Sam escapes-- though as a set up by Coal, who follows Sam, knowing he will lead him to Dean, and he does. When Sam does, Coal steps in and Dean almost kills him, the hunter no match for a demon, let alone a Knight of Hell. Sam manages to step in just in time though, capturing Dean. Crowley, feeling threatened by Dean's growing power, chooses to give up Dean as well instead of helping, and takes away the First Blade from him, and Sam takes Dean back to the bunker.
At the bunker, Sam begins the curing process by injecting purified blood into Dean. They talk for a long time, Dean not pulling any of his punches as far as letting Sam know how he feels about him, about the life they've lead so far. He blame Sam for their mother's death, says that Sam is as much of a monster as he is, and that Dean was done babysitting. He doesn't want to be cured, he doesn't want to be the person, the weak fool, he'd been before. Sam doesn't listen though, and the process begins to work, but Dean manages to escape his restraints, being just human enough to slip through the demon trap. It's game on after that, with Dean hunting down Sam in the bunker, with every intention of killing Sam....
Abilities/Special Powers:
Some of his key abilities are;
Hunting; As said, Dean is a hunter. He knows how to track an enemy without being seen, knows how to lure them out to begin with and not blow his cover. He has nerves of steel when the situation calls for it, and he takes his job very seriously. He's been in the game for most of his life, from the moment his dad started training him for the role of a hunter, to the moment he took on his first hunt -- up to the very end of the Apocalypse.
Dean knows his job. He knows how to deal with his prey, and even if a new creature of some kind pops up, he's very good at figuring out the hows and why's of eradicating the new species. His knowledge on mythology and such is very extensive, and along the ways he has even picked up a few skills in spells himself. Fro example, he knows how to use the angel banishing spell.
He knows how to handle a hunt, from the very early stages of purely asking questions, to finally taking out whatever creature crossed his path. He can be stealthy, and come up with last-minute changes to plans that end up working out, such as a sudden to find an escape route, or change tactics on how to handle the creature he's hunting. His tactical skills often step in as well in the form of being able to read people easily, and knowing how to manipulate them into whatever role he wants them to play.
He's a con-man, able to lie and deceive his way to information that may be inaccessible to a normal person. His skills as a hunter have also lead to him being very skilled at quite a few things that wouldn't sit well with the law. He can pick locks, break into tightly secured buildings and hot-wire cars. Dean also knows how police departments and other such systems work, being able to both impersonate them and avoid them when needed with surprising ease.
Another trait picked up from his father which also plays into his life as hunter, is how well-versed he is in the skills of a mechanic. Dean keeps his '67 Chevy Impala in top condition and has an extensive knowledge on automobiles and engines alike.
Weapon handling; As a hunter, Dean knows his firearms and other monster-handling equipment better than he knows most day-to-day items. From a very early age, Dean was left with the task of looking after his brother while their dad went off on a hunt. John Winchester would give his eldest son a gun and the orders to look after Sam, and to shoot first, ask later. This lead to Dean knowing how to use a gun at a very early age, and by the time he was 11, he'd built his own gun.
This also lead to Dean growing up very skilled with melee weapons, and he is also an exceptionally good shot. He is often seen with weapons such as a chromed Colt 1911, presumably a gun he got from his father, and also a Desert Eagle which is often rounded up with salt bullets. Dean also knows how to handle a sniper rifle, and a machete-- and other large knives and blades.
When all else fails, don't count him out as being uncreative, for Dean'll use just about anything as a weapon if the situation turns grim like that.
Hand-to-hand combat; When things get a little too up close and personal, or he doesn't want to hurt whoever he is fighting, Dean often goes with hand-to-hand combat. It is never revealed what kind of style he uses, but from what is seen, Dean is very skilled at subduing and disarming a person with no weapons of his own. He is also able to take on supernatural creatures this way, though they might be physically stronger than him.
Torture; While in Hell, Dean was Alistair's student, and learned the skills of inflicting torture. He knows how to inflict the absolute maximum amount of pain on a person without having them die, and was hailed as a skilled torturer.
THE MARK OF CAIN AND BEING A DEMONThe Mark of Cain and The First Blade: With the Mark of Cain, Dean's undergone some changes even while a human. The Mark activated a murderous compulsion in him, leaving Dean a whole lot more violent and easy to snap. It's all in an effort to "sate" the Blade, which needs to be continuously used. If it's not, Dean starts to suffer the side-effect which mean spacing out, lack of sleep or rest of mind-- basically, he starts to deteriorate physically and mentally. If the compulsions are given into -- which also become harder to ignore because they grow stronger the more Dean resists -- and Dean takes lives with the Blade, he goes through a rush of power, and strength, the Blade basically a murder-high of sorts, which in turn would compel him to use it more. The stronger the victim of the blade is, the more ruthless Dean becomes.
It should also be noted that the First Blade can kill almost any kind of supernatural being.
Demon: As a demon, Dean gets all the same perks as most of the demons we've seen on the show. That means he has several new abilities under his belt including super-strength, instant healing, invulnerability to things that might have hurt/killed him before, and possible possession. All demons know how to teleport as well, and though we never see Dean do this, given he has control over all other basic demon abilities, he most likely has the power of teleportation, too.
The one thing unique to Dean over other demons is the fact that he cannot be exorcized out of his body because it is still his. Other demons steal people's bodies to possess and use-- Dean hasn't so far. Because Dean is still in his own body, we haven't seen him leave it either. Why bother when you got a handsome face like that, right.
Knight of Hell: A Knight of Hell is a special, stronger demon than the average black-eyed son of a bitch. Dean is classified as such because he turns into a demon after being resurrected by the Mark of Cain, instead of turning into one while stuck in Hell for centuries. Being a Knight of Hell means Dean is immune to the Demon Killing blade which normally kills any demon instantly. Other special abilities associated with being a Knight aren't revealed, but seeing as Dean is still a new demon, he's only just getting used to the basic skills.Weaknesses: While becoming a demon might put Dean ranks higher in terms of strength and durability over humans, he's still vulnerable to some good old classic methods that all demons have to wary of. Holy water, demon traps, angel blades-- they all work on him just as they would on any other demon. The only perk Dean has up his sleeve re: demon traps is, during a curing process, if restoring his humanity isn't completed, Dean has a chance of being just human enough to pass through a demon trap while still technically a demon. He's in that grey area, not fully cured, but weak enough to pass through the sigils.... Afterwards, should the process not be continued, he will regain his demonic strength and state of being.

Along with these canon “abilities”, Dean will have a Ophiuchus given power as well.
Personality:
I'LL FUDGING KILL YOU
At the beginning, Dean is mostly portrayed as a young man with a very healthy amount of humor ready for display at any given moment. He often makes light of situations this way, no matter how futile things might appear at the given time though. As is, during the beginning of Dean's and Sam's hunting career together again, Dean is a lot more confident, outspoken and alive, in more ways than one. He's cocky and arrogant to the point of annoyance, too, though his fondness for Sam will often outshine that even if he and his brother bicker and fight more often than not.
At the end of the day, Dean's a textbook definition of an awesome big brother.
As said, Dean likes to joke around a lot. He has a habit of poking fun at almost anything, always drawing comparisons between people and situations by referring to popular pop culture things and people. Even when serious, Dean isn't able to completely kick the habit, though it is during times like this that he resorts to simpler means of humor like ridiculous and insulting nicknames. As an example he often calls Uriel, an Angel, 'Junkless.' One could say it's a defense mechanism, humor and jokes deflecting the stress of his life, and the multiple losses he and his brother suffer through.
And speaking of Sam...
Sam is Dean's main source of energy. Sam is his meaning and his strength, and despite the co-dependent nature of their relationship, it makes Dean stronger than anyone else. Sam is his reason for waking up in the mornings, if only to keep him safe, to make sure Sam lives on. He relishes the time he gets to spend with Sam during their hunts, his brother being the sole member of his blood-family left alive and kicking. But despite their strong bond, Dean doesn't like to show his weakness', not even to his brother, and hardly ever actually telling Sam how he feels.
Still, it is only under crucially critical times that Dean truly opens, but when he does it is Sam who he turns to, though later Castiel comes to fill that place as well. Even then the information --the thoughts, feelings and whatever else is on his mind-- has to be pried out of Dean and only a few can accomplish that. He'd rather cause an awkward situation by changing the subject if confronted by a out right question about his feelings.
The first major blow to Dean's usually confident and smiley-self is when his father, John Winchester, dies. Dean's anguish over this is very, very clear though he denies any attempts made by Sam to talk about it, this thus causing him to take out his anger in a different way; killing more supernatural beings, and doing so in more brutal methods. He also lashes out more, his anger building faster as he tail-spins from everything he's feeling since the death of his father.. His judgment is clouded and the world around him seems more black and white than ever before, making hunting a lot more simpler and inhuman. Slowly though, Dean is able to come to terms with John's death, letting his older self back-- though never truly being who he was back when his father was alive.
I WISH I COULDN'T FEEL A DAMN THING
When Dean is pulled out of Hell by Castiel, he comes back broken. Three months feel like thirty years in the Pit, and Dean spent every day, every minute and second under the blade, tortured for decades. But what's worse, what broke him, was when he picked up the blade himself and tortured souls for the remaining ten years of his stay. There is no denying that Dean isn't as strong as he was before when he comes back, his confidence having been beaten to almost a breaking point. He is a lot more careful with his decisions and a lot more protective of Sam. He is also a lot more scared; for Sam, for himself and for the world. Having experienced Hell, he does not want to let it break loose on earth, making his judgment frail, not wanting to make hasty decisions.
Still, even whilst suffering with the heavy burdens on his life, Dean tries to keep a positive appearance, though with time-- and to anyone closer to Dean, it is very obvious that he isn't all right. Ready to help people with supernatural problems, Dean tries to keep his personal feelings away from the job, and it is when faced with heavy problems that Dean tries to tune out all of his emotions; both positive and negative ones, this making him cool, calm and efficient.
With the war raging on between demons and angels, it's becoming harder and harder for Dean to just bounce back to his normal self, his character growing more tired and thus colder with each passing event.
This becomes even more apparent during the next year, once Lucifer walks free from his cage. Things happen -- bad things, that change Dean a lot. A sort of cold harshness mixed with worry and guilt over doing the right thing opposed to what he wants to do makes itself apparent in him as the decisions he and his brother make affect the very outcome of both their lives and pretty much the rest of the world. Over the course of the year, he starts to care less and less, even once hitting a point where he simply wants to give up. It's only thanks to Sam and Cas that he doesn't, but never before, really, has he hit such a low.
The world is ending and everyone around him, everyone he loves, is dying.
Dean has a habit of getting rude, even more so than normally, when the stress becomes too much. At one point, at his lowest, he even goes as far as to tug at the very lowest of opinions -- such as Bobby not being his real father, or Sam being a monster. He knows how to hurt people, but it's only ever in a situation as dire as the Apocalypse that this side of him truly shines.
It's ruthless and cold, but it's only way he can keep himself together.
Still, that Dean-ness lingers, always, and the fire that keeps him going, the will to keep fighting no matter how small or defeated never truly goes out.
After the Apocalypse, after Sam jumps into the Pit with Lucifer and Michael, Dean seeks to keep his promise to his brother and try to live a normal life. With a year spent as a civilian, Dean undergoes probably the most drastic change in personality since...forever. He calms down a lot and matures, learning about a different kind of family life with Lisa and Ben. During all this, while a lot of mellower sides are brought out in him, the hunter in Dean also dulls and is forgotten for a while-- until it's forced to resurface once more. And although he does, at least to some extent enjoy the year he spends with Lisa and Ben, there's still that undertone of depression in him. Things simply aren't the same, aren't good at all for him when he knows Sam is most likely suffering down in Hell.
Things are difficult for Dean when Sam comes back, and some of the harsher things in the life of a hunter suddenly seem too black and white to him. His past-self clashes with the person he is today, though he tries to keep both in a balance. It's not always easy though, and thus he worries and stresses a lot since he has been out of the game for a while. The stress and worry over his brother finally find a more sensible sours when he finds out that his brother doesn't have a soul, thus Sam's weird behavior. Everything makes a bit more sense, but none of his stress really calms down. His brother would sell him for a soda if he was really thirsty, and seems to overall just be about anyone else but his brother Sam.
What finally, and for the first time in a very, very long period, gets a real, genuine smile from Dean, and has him appearing a lot lighter, and just happier, is when Sam finally gets his soul back. Though it doesn't last long, with the world under a new threat, while Dean is on a hunt with the newly soul-restored Sam, he acts way more like himself from the past. He smiles, jokes and sort of seems to mold back into his old self; the annoying but caring older brother he was in the first few years of hunting, before the loom of the oncoming Apocalypse.
