Character NAME: Dean Winchester
Canon & MEDIUM: TV series
Canon PULL-POINT: Between season 7 and 8, while Dean is in Purgatory looking for Castiel.
Character AGE: 32-ish, since the writers don't know how to make sense of what year it's supposed to be anymore.

Character ABILITIES:

Dean is a hunter through and through, no matter how long he might sit out of the game. Albeit rusty with a year's break, he still knows what to do, and his gut instincts will never change as long as he's alive. Even with the break, he's been back in the game for a bit now, and even if he isn't as up to bar with his abilities as he might have been at the end of the Apocalypse, he's getting back to that point quite fast anyway since he's been forced back into the ring of things with the Mother of All loose and the war in Heaven.

Some of his key abilities are;

Hunting; As said, Dean is a hunter. He knows how to track an enemy without being seen, knows how to lure them out to begin with and not blow his cover. He has nerves of steel when the situation calls for it, and he takes his job very seriously. He's been in the game for most of his life, from the moment his dad started training him for the role of a hunter, to the moment he took on his first hunt -- up to the very end of the Apocalypse.

Dean knows his job. He knows how to deal with his prey, and even if a new creature of some kind pops up, he's very good at figuring out the hows and why's of eradicating the new species. His knowledge on mythology and such is very extensive, and along the ways he has even picked up a few skills in spells himself. Fro example, he knows how to use the angel banishing spell.

He knows how to handle a hunt, from the very early stages of purely asking questions, to finally taking out whatever creature crossed his path. He can be stealthy, and come up with last-minute changes to plans that end up working out, such as a sudden to find an escape route, or change tactics on how to handle the creature he's hunting. His tactical skills often step in as well in the form of being able to read people easily, and knowing how to manipulate them into whatever role he wants them to play.

He's a con-man, able to lie and deceive his way to information that may be inaccessible to a normal person. His skills as a hunter have also lead to him being very skilled at quite a few things that wouldn't sit well with the law. He can pick locks, break into tightly secured buildings and hot-wire cars. Dean also knows how police departments and other such systems work, being able to both impersonate them and avoid them when needed with surprising ease.

Another trait picked up from his father which also plays into his life as hunter, is how well-versed he is in the skills of a mechanic. Dean keeps his '67 Chevy Impala in top condition and has an extensive knowledge on automobiles and engines alike.

Weapon handling; As a hunter, Dean knows his firearms and other monster-handling equipment better than he knows most day-to-day items. From a very early age, Dean was left with the task of looking after his brother while their dad went off on a hunt. John Winchester would give his eldest son a gun and the orders to look after Sam, and to shoot first, ask later. This lead to Dean knowing how to use a gun at a very early age, and by the time he was 11, he'd built his own gun.

This also lead to Dean growing up very skilled with melee weapons, and he is also an exceptionally good shot. He is often seen with weapons such as a chromed Colt 1911, presumably a gun he got from his father, and also a Desert Eagle which is often rounded up with salt bullets. Dean also knows how to handle a sniper rifle, and a machete-- and other large knives and blades.

When all else fails, don't count him out as being uncreative, for Dean'll use just about anything as a weapon if the situation turns grim like that.

Hand-to-hand combat; When things get a little too up close and personal, or he doesn't want to hurt whoever he is fighting, Dean often goes with hand-to-hand combat. It is never revealed what kind of style he uses, but from what is seen, Dean is very skilled at subduing and disarming a person with no weapons of his own. He is also able to take on supernatural creatures this way, though they might be physically stronger than him.

Torture; While in Hell, Dean was Alistair's student, and learned the skills of inflicting torture. He knows how to inflict the absolute maximum amount of pain on a person without having them die, and was hailed as a skilled torturer.

Character HISTORY:

★ And a written one:

IT STARTS WITH A SPARK...

Dean Winchester was born on January 24th, 1979 in Lawrence, Kansas to Mary and John Winchester.

The first four years of his life were normal, uneventful yet peaceful. When his little brother Sam Winchester was born, things went to hell. On the night of November 2nd, 1983 a demon named Azazel visits the Winchesters and proceeds to find baby Sam's cradle to fulfill his mission of infecting Sam with demon blood. He is successful even though Mary Winchester tries to stop him, and as a result the demon kills her, and through a series of actions causes the house to burn. John finds his wife too late, and takes Sam from his cradle, handing him to his brother. He tells Dean to take his brother out of the house and he does so, with his dad following not far behind.

The fire, the Yellow-Eyed demon behind it and his mother's death, sets in motion everything that is the rest of Dean's life as we know it.

After Mary's death, John becomes obsessed with finding the demon that killed his wife and thus sets out to find it with both Dean and Sam. This leads to John teaching his sons the ways of hunting all things supernatural.

They lead this lifestyle until about 2001, Dean being around 24 to 25 at the time, until Sam decided that he wanted to leave the life of hunting behind and go to college instead. A family fight comparable to a war later, Sam to leaves for Stanford, effectively leaving Dean and a bitter John Winchester behind.

Dean didn't have any communication with his brother for about two years, instead choosing to continue hunting with his dad.

That changes quickly though.

At the age of 26, Dean was forced to contact Sam again when their father hadn't returned from a hunting trip, something that had never happened before, not without communication, and it was starting to concern him. He found Sam, whisked him along on a hunt which lead to a supernatural case but gave no clue as to their father's location. When they returned to Stanford, they found Sam's girlfriend, Jessica, brutally murdered the same way as their mother had been 24 years earlier. It was this cruel fate and end of a life that was enough for Sam to decide to join Dean in their search for their father.

From here, the Winchesters set on the road, Dean and Sam set off to find their father and the demon that killed their mother.

For about a year or so, the they travel together while fighting all things supernatural that haunt and terrorize normal civilians. Along the journey they meet lots of new faces, of both the evil and good side. And it isn't long before one of the brothers, Sam, meets a girl named Meg who turns out to be a demon not too long after. And it's even sooner that Sam and Dean finally find their father again. It turns out their dad had been after a gun, the Colt, that could potentially kill anything. He plans to hunt the demon responsible for Mary's death down and take him out for good with his new weapon.

Their reunion is cut short as soon enough though, as John is possessed by the Yellow-Eyed Demon who then attacks both Dean and Sam. Using a gun that can kill any demon, Sam shoots Azazel in the leg to get him out of their father's body. The demon escapes, leaving behind the wounded Winchesters. Their lack of luck doesn't stop there though, as when driving for safety, the Impala is crushed by a truck driven by a demon possessed driver.

THE SACRIFICE...

Hospitals. The very place the Winchesters try to avoid due to their shady lifestyle, is where all three are rushed off to, of course, after the accident. Dean, having already been hurt by Azazel through his father, ends up in a coma, while Sam escapes with some heavy bruising. John, though stuck in bed, also gets off with less damage.

At death's door, Dean is supposed to die, and he wakes up to find himself a spirit, wandering the in-between of life and death. It's there that he meets a reaper, Tessa, who explains that Dean must either come with her and face death or stay in the limbo state of a spirit which, she says, will most likely drive him crazy before long. Dean, not wanting to leave his brother and dad behind, refuses to choose either, and continues to try and find a way back to life.

During this, John Winchester starts to suspects that Dean will most likely not wake up, and so do a father's job, he summons the very demon he's been hunting for so long, and makes a deal with Azazel; his life for Dean's. Azazel agrees but wants the Colt in on the deal as well. They shake on it, the deal is made, and Dean wakes up, alive once more. With his last minutes rushing to end before John dies, he tells Dean a secret; because of what the demon did to Sam so many years ago, John's goal has been to keep Sam safe from the blood's influence, but he believes he is unable to do so and if Sam strays too far from his path, John wants Dean to kill Sam.

John dies, the deal seen through, leaving behind a guilt-heavy Dean and a mourning Sam.

After they leave the hospital, Dean and Sam continue doing what they do best; hunt supernatural beings and looking for Azazel. After a series of hunts, each one bringing them closer and closer to their goal, Sam is kidnapped by Azazel who reveals to him that Sam, along with a few other people, is special, and that Sam has powers; he can exorcise demons with his mind. Dean, worried beyond belief, goes looking for Sam with a family friend, Bobby, and they eventually find Sam in a small abandoned town. But right as Dean finds Sam, his brother is stabbed in the back and killed by another who was kidnapped.

Struck with grief, Dean proceeds to sell his soul to a Crossroads Demon --a demon that will grant any wish in exchange for the person's soul which they will come get in, usually, ten years-- to get back Sam. At frist, the demon is very tricky about making the deal and doesn't want to give Dean the full ten years that have been offered to so many. Instead, Dean gets only one year but alas he also gets Sam back.

The deal is done, much like John before him, and Sam breathes once more.

During this, the boy who killed Sam has opened the Devil's Gate --a literal gate to Hell-- with the help of Azazel, and released thousands of demons into the world. Dean and Sam are there as it happens and come face to face with Azazel again. John emerges from Hell, also freed, to help the boys fight the demon and eventually Dean uses the Colt, back from the demon's hands, to finish Azazel off. John disappears, soul finally on its way to Heaven, and Dean and Sam are left with their lives intact.

For now.
THE DEAL, THE YEAR...

With one year left to live, Dean decides to enjoy the time he has left, while Sam looks for any way to get his brother out of the deal.

Despite Dean's wishes, their life is quickly filled with a new problem; Lilith. The first demon created by Lucifer, she wants Sam dead because according to Azazel, Sam is supposed to lead a demon army but Lilith is unwilling to give Sam that right and rank.

She's also the demon holding Dean's contract. Kill her, and Dean might have a chance to escape his fate.

While hunting her down, the brothers continue to look for a way to save Dean from Hell, and run into many new faces once more. Among them, and probably most importantly, is the demon Ruby who claims to not be the same as her black-eyed sisters and brothers, but instead wants to help the Winchesters. Sam, wanting all the help they can get, accepts her words despite Dean's wishes, and she joins them from time to time. Still, despite their efforts, luck isn't on their side and Dean's days are quickly running short.

During all of this, Dean tries to pacify his brother, telling him that he's okay with his fate, that it's more important that Sam gets a chance at life. Even a demi-god, the Trickster, attempts to make Sam believe this for reasons he will not share, and kills Dean over a hundred times to prove to Sam that he cannot save his brother from the deal and that he should accept the fact.

Sam, of course, doesn't.

It doesn't take long until the year is up, and in a last effort stand against Lilith, Dean and Sam attack her head-on. She proves to be too strong though and takes over Ruby's body, and sics hellhounds after Dean. Mauled to death by the vicious mutts, Dean dies as he is meant to, soul sent spiraling down into the Pit. Sam, left to face the demon, manages to overpower her with his own powers and escapes with his life.

But what good is that, with his brother gone?

THE RIGHTEOUS MAN IS SAVED...

Dean Winchester wakes up in his coffin four months after having been killed.

Confused, he digs his way out of his grave and proceeds to look for either Bobby or Sam. He finds an abandoned gas station and while there, something tries to talk to him-- something with a voice so loud it shatters the glass from the windows and almost makes his ears bleed. After the odd encounter, Dean goes to Bobby's place where, after a series of experiments on Bobby's part to see that this is indeed the real Dean, they both decide to go look for Sam, who had after Dean's death cut all connections with anyone.

They find him in a motel and after heart-wrenching reunion, they start to wonder who or what exactly brought Dean back from Hell. After digging through books and contacts, they try to summon the being but it turns out that seeing its true form is burn out your eyes-- as the woman, Pamela, who helps them do the ritual finds out the hard way.

Unwilling to give up, Dean and Bobby try again while Sam sneaks off with Ruby, who is now in a new vessel. Attempting to summon the creature once more, Dean and Bobby find themselves in the presence of an angel by the name of Castiel. Castiel tells Dean that he pulled him out of Hell because God demanded it, and that they have work for him. Dean, shaken and unwilling to believe that he deserved to be saved, listens to the angel's words reluctantly. It turns out that the demons want the Morning Star, Lucifer, to be freed from Hell and that in order to do this, they have to break the Sixty-Six Seals that bind him to the Pit.

And what's better, if they are successful, Lucifer will break free and start the Apocalypse.

Here starts the mission to stop the demons from breaking the seals, this time with the shady help of Heaven on their side.

At one point during their fight, Castiel transports Dean back in time to the year 1973, to Lawrence, Kansas. There, Dean learns of the connection between Azazel and Mary Winchester, and realizes that he's the one who made the demon aware of his family to begin with thus meaning that he could very well be blamed for both his grandparent's and parent's deaths, Sam's supernatural powers and the very life they lead. Castiel, on the other hand, says that even if Dean had never gone back in time, things would have still turned out as they did since it was all destined to because he is the Righteous Man. The soul meant to be saved from hell, the one who will fight for Heaven in the dawn of the end of the world.

It's a heavy task to carry, and Dean's reluctance doesn't help Heaven's mission.

With the Winchesters butting heads with the angels, the angels find their numbers lessening. To find out why and who, Dean is asked by Castiel to torture Alastair-- a demon from Hell who tortured Dean for thirty years. He's to get answers as to who is killing angels, but Alastair reveals to Dean that he was the first seal out of Sixty-Six, and that he set Apocalypse rolling when he broke in Hell and started torturing people himself. Alastair breaks free due to the trap holding him mysteriously breaking, and almost kills Dean before Castiel steps in. Powerful beyond a normal demon, it's only Sam who is able to exorcise him with his mind -- and with much more power than Dean ever remembers him having.

Dean finds out that Sam is drinking demon blood, from Ruby, to make his powers stronger.

Naturally, this upsets and worries Dean to no end and he asks his brother to stop but is met with resistance. But with Sam turning himself into the very thing they hunt, Dean is forced to trick Sam into visiting Bobby's place where Bobby and Dean lock him into an anti-demon chamber to detox him.

After listening to his brother's painful withdrawal symptoms, Dean asks Castiel to make sure that Sam doesn't have to kill Lilith and that Dean will serve the angels and God fully if they can promise that. Despite agreeing and putting Dean's mind to ease, Sam sneaks out when Castiel releases him. After finding out, Dean goes after his brother, eventually comforting him in a motel where they argue over Ruby's true motives and what the poison in Sam's system is doing to him. A fight ensues, where Dean tells Sam that if he chooses to go with Ruby, chooses to continue this, he has no right to come back. With his unnatural strength, Sam wins and chooses his path, leaving Dean a broken mess...

With no time to go after Sam despite everything that was aid, the angles transport Dean to a 'safe room', where the angel Zachariah explains to Dean that they do in fact want Lucifer to be freed and that they also want the Apocalypse to start. In order for all of this to happen though, they need Sam to kill Lilith who is the final Seal. Horrified of their true intentions, Dean asks Castiel help in stopping the angels. Castiel hesitates but having learned the true meaning of free will, Castiel agrees and teleports Dean out of the 'safe room.'

They visit Chuck, a prophet of the Lord to ask him where Sam will kill Lilith so that they can get there before it all goes down. Due to his treason against the angels and dangerous proximity to Chuck, Castiel sends Dean off to stop Sam while he stays behind to face Chuck's guardian Archangel.

Transported to the church, Dean is too late, just in time to see Sam kills Lilith, thus breaking the final seal. Seconds later Ruby reveals that she has known this entire time what Sam's true purpose was, and that she'd been playing them both from day one. Dean kills Ruby with the demon-killing knife, only to be left with his brother to watch as the seal breaks and Lucifer's cage opens...

IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD, BABY...

Unexpectedly, Dean and Sam are transported from where Lucifer is about to be freed onto an airplane. Confused, they wonder who saved them but find no answer to their question, and are left to deal with a mess beyond thought.

The Apocalypse has started, and they're pulling at straws to figure out how to stop it.

On the trail of some clues, the boys are interrupted by Zachariah, who reveals to Dean that he is the Archangel Michael's vessel and that the angel is meant to fight the Devil through him in the Apocalypse. Dean refuses to accept this, and just as Zachariah is about to kill the Winchesters, Castiel shows up, alive and as powerful as ever, banishing the angels.

Afterwards, they manage to fall off the angel radar for a little bit. Safe for a moment, Sam decides they should part ways because they are each other's weaknesses. Dean, despite how much he cares about his brother, agrees and they Winchesters go their separate ways.

Dean, flying solo, is occasionally accompanied by Castiel, who thinks that finding God will clear up all the answers. But even when Dean and Castiel capture the archangel Raphael to ask for God's location, the angel simply tells them that God isn't around anymore and that he won't help them...

With that dead end, Dean is left to his own devices again.

Zachariah finds Dean soon enough though, and sends the older Winchester to the future, specifically the year 2014. It is there that Dean learns of his fate which is to watch Sam become Lucifer's vessel and wreck havoc on Earth in the name of the Apocalypse. Dean also learns that if he doesn't say yes to Michael on being his vessel, the angels will leave and let the world rot. Once back in his own time, Dean still refuses to accept the offer and instead looks for and finds Sam and they promise to keep each other human and to not give up.

With renewed hope, Dean and Sam venture onwards, fighting both demos and angels now while each day counts closer to the end of the world. With the Colt in hand, they decide to try and take on Lucifer. This mission ends in disaster, Dean and Sam losing precious friends only to also find out that there are a few creatures the Colt can't kill, including Lucifer.

Hope dimmed and quickly dying, Dean and Sam are left with nothing new to go on...

Eventually, all leads to Sam having to say yes, to trick Lucifer to trap him in the Cage. Fighting angels and demons left and right, things only managed to get worse and worse in the usual supernatural manner, right up until the final showdown between Lucifer and Michael. it's here that Dean's faced with one of the hardest moments of his life; letting Sam say yes to Lucifer in order for their plan to stop the whole show hopefully work. It does, somewhat, as the great end comes to an end, but at the cost of Sam Winchester sacrificing himself and falling into the pit. Literally.

This is followed by one hell of a year, but not in the way we'd expect. Dean lives a normal life with Lisa and Ben, and while it's a nice break for him, he's never not guilty about what happened to Sam, and tries to find ways to bring him back which only end in failure. This "dream" that he's had of an apple pie life isn't anything like what he'd expected, not when everything from before the end still weighs down on him, not when his brother isn't alive. He's as happy as he can be with Lisa and Ben, but at the end of the day, Dean's isn't in a good place. Lisa and Ben are good people, but they're just not right for Dean no matter how much he tries to fool himself.

A year later, Sam comes back through unknown sources which of course is a massive relief for Dean. It's here that, after some convincing from his brother, he takes up hunting again. It's a reluctant and difficult road with his brother being the same yet not, and his own hardships with having been out of commission from hunting for a year. Dean's relationship is hence strained, since there simply isn't something right about Sam and none of the questions he has are being answered...

When Sam comes back, another familiar family member does too. Namely Samuel campbell, Sam and Dean's grandfather from Mary's side. Neither he or Sam know how they're back and don't want to know too eagerly either, and Dean, though suspicious leaves it at that, too. He's not too fond of Samuel, and the feeling seems mutual as Samuel sees him weak because of his year out of hunting, but they get along grudgingly enough to see some hunts through.

Castiel, while still a major player in Dean's life, is mostly absent after the apocalypse gets avoided. Having not spoken to the angel in the year he'd spent with Lisa and Ben, Dean only gets to see Cas every now and then, and most of those meetings are stern and stressed. Castle has his own problems and Dean has his hands full Sam and Samuel, ending with little time to fix his breaking friendship with the angel.

Soon enough things get real, and it turns out that his brother lost his soul while in hell, coming back without that vital piece which makes him human. Eventually he gets his soul restored, however Death puts up a wall between the memories he'd have of hell now that his battered soul is back. Things boil down to the war going on in heaven, where Cas is taking drastic measures to win, including siding with a demon and using souls to power up. Shit hits the fan, and at the end of it all, Cas has opened the door to purgatory, devouring the souls from within including the legendary monster leviathan and declaring himself a god.

Castiel break the wall in Sam's head, and Dean is left to deal the aftermath of Sam's wall coming down inside his brain, and eventually Castiel's death, and the now free Leviathan. Again, things boil down eventually to taking out Dick Roman, the head of the leviathan. with the loss of Bobby, and the +1 of a newly returned Castiel and a demonic sidekick in Meg, the Winchesters manage to tackle the enemy once again, only this time ending with Cas and Dean whisked off to purgatory...

Character PERSONALITY:

I'LL FUDGING KILL YOU

At the beginning, Dean is mostly portrayed as a young man with a very healthy amount of humor ready for display at any given moment. He often makes light of situations this way, no matter how futile things might appear at the given time though. As is, during the beginning of Dean's and Sam's hunting career together again, Dean is a lot more confident, outspoken and alive, in more ways than one. He's cocky and arrogant to the point of annoyance, too, though his fondness for Sam will often outshine that even if he and his brother bicker and fight more often than not.

At the end of the day, Dean's a textbook definition of an awesome big brother.

As said, Dean likes to joke around a lot. He has a habit of poking fun at almost anything, always drawing comparisons between people and situations by referring to popular pop culture things and people. Even when serious, Dean isn't able to completely kick the habit, though it is during times like this that he resorts to simpler means of humor like ridiculous and insulting nicknames. As an example he often calls Uriel, an Angel, 'Junkless.' One could say it's a defense mechanism, humor and jokes deflecting the stress of his life, and the multiple losses he and his brother suffer through.

And speaking of Sam...

Sam is Dean's main source of energy. Sam is his meaning and his strength, and despite the co-dependent nature of their relationship, it makes Dean stronger than anyone else. Sam is his reason for waking up in the mornings, if only to keep him safe, to make sure Sam lives on. He relishes the time he gets to spend with Sam during their hunts, his brother being the sole member of his blood-family left alive and kicking. But despite their strong bond, Dean doesn't like to show his weakness', not even to his brother, and hardly ever actually telling Sam how he feels.

Still, it is only under crucially critical times that Dean truly opens, but when he does it is Sam who he turns to, though later Castiel comes to fill that place as well. Even then the information --the thoughts, feelings and whatever else is on his mind-- has to be pried out of Dean and only a few can accomplish that. He'd rather cause an awkward situation by changing the subject if confronted by a out right question about his feelings.

The first major blow to Dean's usually confident and smiley-self is when his father, John Winchester, dies. Dean's anguish over this is very, very clear though he denies any attempts made by Sam to talk about it, this thus causing him to take out his anger in a different way; killing more supernatural beings, and doing so in more brutal methods. He also lashes out more, his anger building faster as he tail-spins from everything he's feeling since the death of his father.. His judgment is clouded and the world around him seems more black and white than ever before, making hunting a lot more simpler and inhuman. Slowly though, Dean is able to come to terms with John's death, letting his older self back-- though never truly being who he was back when his father was alive.

I WISH I COULDN'T FEEL A DAMN THING

When Dean is pulled out of Hell by Castiel, he comes back broken. Three months feel like thirty years in the Pit, and Dean spent every day, every minute and second under the blade, tortured for decades. But what's worse, what broke him, was when he picked up the blade himself and tortured souls for the remaining ten years of his stay. There is no denying that Dean isn't as strong as he was before when he comes back, his confidence having been beaten to almost a breaking point. He is a lot more careful with his decisions and a lot more protective of Sam. He is also a lot more scared; for Sam, for himself and for the world. Having experienced Hell, he does not want to let it break loose on earth, making his judgment frail, not wanting to make hasty decisions.

Still, even whilst suffering with the heavy burdens on his life, Dean tries to keep a positive appearance, though with time-- and to anyone closer to Dean, it is very obvious that he isn't all right. Ready to help people with supernatural problems, Dean tries to keep his personal feelings away from the job, and it is when faced with heavy problems that Dean tries to tune out all of his emotions; both positive and negative ones, this making him cool, calm and efficient.

With the war raging on between demons and angels, it's becoming harder and harder for Dean to just bounce back to his normal self, his character growing more tired and thus colder with each passing event.

This becomes even more apparent during the next year, once Lucifer walks free from his cage. Things happen -- bad things, that change Dean a lot. A sort of cold harshness mixed with worry and guilt over doing the right thing opposed to what he wants to do makes itself apparent in him as the decisions he and his brother make affect the very outcome of both their lives and pretty much the rest of the world. Over the course of the year, he starts to care less and less, even once hitting a point where he simply wants to give up. It's only thanks to Sam and Cas that he doesn't, but never before, really, has he hit such a low.

The world is ending and everyone around him, everyone he loves, is dying.

Dean has a habit of getting rude, even more so than normally, when the stress becomes too much. At one point, at his lowest, he even goes as far as to tug at the very lowest of opinions -- such as Bobby not being his real father, or Sam being a monster. He knows how to hurt people, but it's only ever in a situation as dire as the Apocalypse that this side of him truly shines.

It's ruthless and cold, but it's only way he can keep himself together.

Still, that Dean-ness lingers, always, and the fire that keeps him going, the will to keep fighting no matter how small or defeated never truly goes out.

After the Apocalypse, after Sam jumps into the Pit with Lucifer and Michael, Dean seeks to keep his promise to his brother and try to live a normal life. With a year spent as a civilian, Dean undergoes probably the most drastic change in personality since...forever. He calms down a lot and matures, learning about a different kind of family life with Lisa and Ben. During all this, while a lot of mellower sides are brought out in him, the hunter in Dean also dulls and is forgotten for a while-- until it's forced to resurface once more. And although he does, at least to some extent enjoy the year he spends with Lisa and Ben, there's still that undertone of depression in him. Things simply aren't the same, aren't good at all for him when he knows Sam is most likely suffering down in Hell.

Things are difficult for Dean when Sam comes back, and some of the harsher things in the life of a hunter suddenly seem too black and white to him. His past-self clashes with the person he is today, though he tries to keep both in a balance. It's not always easy though, and thus he worries and stresses a lot since he has been out of the game for a while. The stress and worry over his brother finally find a more sensible sours when he finds out that his brother doesn't have a soul, thus Sam's weird behavior. Everything makes a bit more sense, but none of his stress really calms down. His brother would sell him for a soda if he was really thirsty, and seems to overall just be about anyone else but his brother Sam.

What finally, and for the first time in a very, very long period, gets a real, genuine smile from Dean, and has him appearing a lot lighter, and just happier, is when Sam finally gets his soul back. Though it doesn't last long, with the world under a new threat, while Dean is on a hunt with the newly soul-restored Sam, he acts way more like himself from the past. He smiles, jokes and sort of seems to mold back into his old self; the annoying but caring older brother he was in the first few years of hunting (seasons 1-3), before the loom of the oncoming Apocalypse.

[ hello, exsilium. some of you might remember this face, some not. dean remembers though, remembers his past stay and he's not looking too hot about being back, not one bit. he huffs quietly, a large, odd looking blade-like weapon in his hands before he addresses the device. ]

There and back again, huh. Can't say I ever thought I'd rebook this holiday, though it's not like I remembered this joint back home. For the better, I guess.

Anyway- [ dean looks squarely at the screen now. ] - looks like my weapon's changed. Ain't she beauty? Good for gettin' all the dirty work done.

[ smirk!! oh, and as a forced afterthought; ]

Also, there's-- I mean, Sam Winchester, he's still not here, right? Yea high— [ let him motion vaguely at something that would be inhumanely tall. ] Kinda geeky looking? And, uh, Cas— Castiel. Dark hair, blue eyes. Ugly trench coat?

If you know ‘em, send ‘em my way.

Third PERSON:

Dean hadn't been kidding when he'd said he'd thought he'd never see this place again. 'Course, he knew from before how Exsilium worked, how the Initiative had the power to take people from all over, and multiple times on top of that to boot. He remembers, even if his memories are a little frayed and torn, but it makes none of it easier. He's alone here now, no Sam -- though his brother had been out of the picture long before Dean had last departed --, no Cas -- he's half sure it might be better that way though, despite the tug of something that lies smothered between anger and overwhelming sadness over the angel's disappearance-- which makes the place... daunting.

Purgatory made sense. Purgatory had been pure and it was a realm meant for monsters. He hadn't belonged, shouldn't have ever crossed over to what its residents so fondly called "monster heaven", and yet it had made so much sense so soon. This place-- he feels alien, like an outsider even if he'd grown to find some kind of home in it beforehand.

Before was before though, and this is now.

Fingers graze lightly over the side of the shot glass as Dean leans against the bar. The clear liquid within looks appealing, much better than the thoughts currently invading his head. A war is a war, he figures, same here as it had been in Purgatory. If anything, he had nothing to lose now, no one to protect which should be freeing, right?

Right.
